We’re celebrating Pride Month with a screening of the moving documentary about the fondly remembered local piano bar, The Other Side.
Jane Cantillon’s documentary about the Silver Lake gay piano bar, the last of its kind, interweaves personal interviews and archival footage with performances at the piano. The film captures candid stories from bar patrons about gay life in Los Angeles from the ’40s on, including tales love and loss, police raids and arrests at the bar, and the horrific years of the AIDS crisis. The film records the poignant closing of the piano bar in June of 2013.
After losing so many loved ones to AIDS, the filmmaker feels these men who survived the epidemic have so much to teach us about growing old gracefully while embracing life and their history.
