Hello friends of the Micheltorena School & Community Garden:
As many of you know the garden is a proud project of the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council founded in the year 2010 with a generous grant from the board. Since that time, board members have dedicated hundreds of hours alongside neighbors, parents, children and teachers, growing the garden into a thriving place and a model for community gardens everywhere.
The garden is teeming with life and we're so excited to be heading into summer with potlucks blazing & garden events aplenty. A few things we want to put on your radar for the coming season and beyond.
1). Frances is looking for additional helpers with morning chicken care for @lasmichickas. The hope is to double and even triple up and work by her side. This will serve to create back up and also to train gardeners & neighbors as to what is going on in the mornings with feeding, watering checking for eggs etc. One could sign on for weekly or monthly service, but consistency will be the key. She is also seeking assistance with some chicken care in evenings as well as a
Tuesday evening compost run to the Farmer's Market around
7:15PM. Please contact
tran.frances@gmail.com if interested.
2) We need a team assembled to source and create the final parts for our pizza & bread barrel oven we have been making from scratch with community-created adobe bricks. The oven we are attempting to build is a Barrel Oven and we were about to buy parts from
fi
respeaking.com, but they are backordered until 2014 ...so we are going to build on our own from used & recycled parts. We are specifically seeking a re-purposed industrial steel barrel in the LA area and welding assembly help ~ please contact
greenschoolgarden@gmail.com to get involved.
3) We have made major effort to rebuild our watering system and we are about 75% finished. interested in continuing the effort? We are further interested in attempting to draw, fund and build a giant water harvesting system similar to what they're doing at Farm Lab downtown. This would be storage for hundreds of thousands of gallons of captured water (expanding on the concepts we already have built, come check it out!). Please come down on Saturdays or contact Amy at
gaia
grove@gmail.com and/or Woody at
agwoodhams@gmail.com.
4) Interested in Composting? Learning about it and or help with our ongoing compost pile? Also, planting, weeding, watering, mulching, trimming, etc...? Please join us every
Saturday from
10am-2pm during regular garden volunteer hours, or if you have questions/ideas on this, please contact Leonardo at
sustainsl@gmail.com.
5) The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council has unanimously voted to sponsor a Community Garden Summit for the fall to examine best practices and identify potential gardens sites and community green spaces across each region of Silver Lake. If you're interested in helping to organize the summit or have ideas about what we might include in such a summit, please come to a potluck and/or contact SLNC Board Members Charles Herman-Wurmfeld (
charles.h.w@silverlakenc.org) or Amy Clarke (
amy.clarke@silverlakenc.org) to share ideas.
6) Finally, come celebrate summer and the longest day of the year with us in the garden! We will host a special Summer Solstice Potluck on
Thurs Jun 20 at 7PM ~ please bring a delicious dish to share with your neighbors and the community, a fun friend, and your own ideas for the rest of the summer, the fall, the upcoming garden summit, and beyond. Musical instruments encouraged at this potluck as well, as we will be getting ready for Make Music LA the next day (
http://www.makemusicla.org) with concerts all around LA, Silver Lake - including the main Sunset Triangle Plaza acoustic concert from
4PM-8PM (
https://www.facebook.com/events/652335761448847/) followed by a late night candelight concert in the garden itself. Potluck community dinners happen at
7PM every Thursday through September...join any time.
Thank you for your continued support & community and see you in the garden!
