LOS ANGELES -- Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell and the City’s Bureau of Street Services broke ground Thursday on a major streetscape improvement project which aims to fix broken sidewalks and add more trees along Sunset Blvd in Silver Lake.

The $1.725 million dollar project in Sunset Junction calls for sidewalk repairs, as well as curb replacement and bump outs that will bring both sides of Sunset Blvd closer together. The project also includes the addition of continental crosswalks, new trash receptacles, trees and enhanced bicycle infrastructure such as repainted lanes and bike racks.

“When finished, this project will help us celebrate everything that is so special about the Silver Lake neighborhood,” said Councilmember O’Farrell. “Whether you’re dining, shopping, or just going for a stroll along Sunset Blvd, these improvements will not only enhance the look and feel of the street, but it will also make the area safer for those who visit the area.”

The project is taking place along a quarter-mile stretch of Sunset Blvd. known as Sunset Junction between Santa Monica Blvd and Edgecliff Drive.

“When we finish this project, this community will be more accessible, more walkable, more business friendly, and the quality of life will improve,“ Nazario Sauceda, director of the City’s Bureau of Street Services.

The project is being funded by Metro, with a portion being funded by Councilmember O’Farrell. The work will be completed by the Bureau of Street Services, and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation also assisted with the project design.

The total cost of the project is $1,724,800 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. A second phase of the streetscape will start later in the year, with the construction of a 13th District-funded permanent architectural installation at Sunset Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd.
