Pianist James Lent, a regular entertainer at the bar, will play before the screening with a Q&A after with the filmmaker.
"The Other Side - A Queer History's Last Call" is a documentary about the legendary piano bar in Silver Lake and its patrons who share their stories about gay life in Los Angeles from the '40's on.
An emotional documentary about the last gay piano bar in the director's neighborhood of Silver Lake, it was the CHEERS for the older set. The film interweaves personal interviews and archival footage, including various performances at the piano. It captures candid stories from bar patrons who share tales of what it was like to be gay in the '40s to the '80s, and they recount their stories of raids and entrapment's at the bar by the LAPD where lives were ruined for just going out for a beer. The filmmaker started the project in 2004, and ended the movie with the sad closing of the bar in 2012 to make way for a neighborhood family restaurant.
