Silver Lake's Gallery at 3517 West Sunset Blvd. in Sunset Junction

By Clint Lohr

The Gallery At 3517 West Sunset Blvd. in Silverlake's Sunset Junction is an eclectic array of artwork which includes etchings, serigraphs, ink on vintage paper, collage, mixed media, and oil or acrylic paint on canvas.

Located between Maltman and Golden Gate Avenues, one must walk through the Dustmuffin gift shop, which opened in April 2011. The gallery was opened several months later.

"Seeing The Chanson D'Automne" is the current exhibit which opened September 28th and runs through November 10th. The artwork includes pieces created especially for the exhibit, and is meant to be a visual description of French poet Paul Verlain's "Chanson d'automne," which was published in 1866.

"In the poem, Verlaine was expressing the sadness of growing old," explained gallery owner Kerry Vitiello."And in the exhibition, too, we feel the inevitable loss of the past and resignation that livelier days will not return. The exhibition celebrates the process usually in unconventional ways through the eyes of artists who are developing their own paths."

Examples of the exhibit include Santa Monica artist Margaret von Biesen's oil on canvas "Girl in a Gold Study," and Shane Bartlett's mixed media "As if a Dead Leaf." Vitiello said the artists were asked to visually interpret Verlain's poem. She also outlined the type of artists her gallery looks for to display their work there.

"We look for artists that have a body of work with a distinct point of view and the power to transfer something palpable to the viewer. We also look for work that has a clever sense of humor. We have a definite focus on curating shows for Los Angeles talent. One of the criteria for "Seeing the Chanson d'Automne" was that the artist had to be a resident of Los Angeles."

However, Vitiello said, the gallery does not limit themselves to be exclusively local. The upcoming solo show, running November 30th 2012 through January 5th, 2013, will feature Spanish artist Eva Armisen who will be displaying her etchings and serigraphs. Vitiello has been following the artist's career for many years.

"It is important to us to show a variety of mediums with the goal of providing our audience a unique experience."

The gallery is open Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 11am to 6pm, and Thursday, Friday , and Saturday from 11am to 7pm. The phone number is 323-644-2828.
