Hey Everyone,
Lot of people turned out for [City Councilmember, District 13, Tom] LaBonge's meeting yesterday, regarding the shrinkage of traffic lanes on Rowena. There were a number of comments from residents who like this "road diet," and a number of comments from residents who don't.
There are both pros & cons, and one of the issues that was brought up, is that NO THOUGHT went into the potential impacts on the surrounding streets. No thought was given to how traffic would back up on Rowena, and/or how many people might use surrounding streets to get around faster.
Those of us on Waverly Drive between Auburn and Rokeby, have seen a large increase in traffic, and a serious increase in speeding (and stop sign running at Rokeby.) Have you seen speeding on other sections of Waverly Drive? Or the connecting streets between Rowena and Waverly?
Upshot is this: There isn't a definitive "yes" it will remain for good, but LaBonge is for it, and it looks like it probably will not go away. But they said they want to get more data, and look at how some of the impacts might be remedied.
LaBonge did take a straw poll re: how many people like the Bike lanes, and how many don't. Of those in the room, it was pretty evenly divided. (Part of the issue is that there's no conduit to the bike lanes on Rowena, none before and none after, so these are Bike lanes that go nowhere currently.)
If you didn't make it to the meeting (or if you did but you didn't speak), and you want YOUR voice heard, you can contact our Councilmember Tom LaBonge's office with your comments: 213/485-3337. (Include your name and street address, so LaBonge's office will know where the comments are coming from.)
Thanks.
