Gomez Praises Army Corps Proposal, Pledges Continued Support from State for L.A. River

Gomez bill to expand Greenways recently passed State Assembly

Los Angeles, CA – Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) celebrated the joint efforts of Mayor Eric Garcetti, local organizations and community leaders on successfully collaborating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to earn their recommendation to adopt Alternative 20. The Alt 20 proposal will provide $1 Billion in funding for the restoration of the L.A. River.

Gomez has played a significant role in efforts to earn funding for the River’s restoration. Last year, he joined a delegation visit to Washington D.C. to advocate adoption of the proposal. This year, Gomez is carrying a bill to help expand greenways throughout the state.

“Thanks to the leadership of Mayor Garcetti & local organizations, the L.A. River will receive $1 Billion for restoration,” said Assemblymember Gomez. “I am proud to have been a part of the efforts that helped deliver the money and I am committed to continue fighting for state funding to help expand the restoration.

Gomez’s bill, AB 1922, will allow for further restorations along the L.A. River by giving local municipalities and neighborhoods the opportunity and tools to apply for additional sources of funding from the state to develop greenways along the River. AB 1922 recently passed the State Assembly floor with bipartisan support and is headed to the State Senate for its approval.

“I would also like to thank the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for their recommendation and vision for the future of our River,” Gomez added. “This is the first step in bring our River back to life with wetlands, bike paths, recreation zones and greenways.”

Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez represents the 51st Assembly District which includes the Northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods of Echo Park, Mission Junction, Historic Filipinotown, Chinatown, Glassell Park, Montecito Heights, Monterey Hills, El Sereno, Highland Park, Mt. Washington, Lincoln Heights, City Terrace, Elysian Valley, Cypress Park, Eagle Rock, portion of Silverlake, and unincorporated East Los Angeles.
